True enough, but once you learn to use it, there's no end to what you can do.

about me

Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.

Fascinating stories are everywhere. Some come from the imaginations of writers, others from real life. I tell both kinds. (Best. Job. Ever.)

When not writing, I dabble at other creative things: drawing, taking photos, singing and playing guitar. I'm not great at any of them, but that's not the point. They're fun and challenging. They help me grow.

I'm an explorer. I've traveled to amazing places - Russia, Europe, Asia - to do research, work or teach. I love to learn about new places and cultures, and I get excited about scientific discoveries and geeky inventions.

I wasn't always an author of stories for kids. I used to be a journalist, a university professor, a foreign affairs officer, and a research analyst. Yeah, I've been busy.

Here are some fun facts about me:

  • I have a mischievous poodle named Jazz and had a brilliant poodle named Murphy.

  • I am proud to call myself a nerd.

  • I wore a sailor's hat to high school. Why? Who knows.

  • I love drawing cartoon horses.

  • I used to have horses (real ones, not cartoons) named Honey, Genius, and Spirit.

  • I root, root, root for the Washington Nationals!

* Ph.D. means "Doctor of Philosophy."

It means I went to school for a long, long, long time and learned lots - but not how to fix bones or cure sore throats. I'm not that kind of doctor.

visits

Interested in having me visit? I love coming to schools, libraries, and bookstores to share cool things with cool kids (and that means all of them)!

I offer workshops that focus on writing (fiction and nonfiction) or on STEM-related or historical content - or both. All workshops are interactive and fun and can be tailored to different levels, elementary to high school.

Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.
